Devils Grab Pair of One Run Wins Over Bears

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team erased a two-run deficit in game one on Saturday to secure a 9-8 win thanks to a Johnny Bruno bases loaded walk-off double in the tenth inning, before building up a 8-1 advantage in game two and holding on for the 8-7 victory to earn a pivotal Centennial Conference doubleheader sweep of Ursinus College at MacPhail Field.

Pitching Decision: W - Drew Norton (2-1) | L - Dan Bass (4-2)
Inside the Game
  • Ursinus got on the board in the first against starter Sam Bliss as Brandon Sullivan reached on an error, before coming around to score on a single by Brett Barrett.  They made it 2-0 during the second when Kyle Rosenfeld led off with a single and then crossed when Matthew Callahan doubled to left. Dickinson got one back in the home-half when singles by Luke Gartland and Matt Conforti had runners at the corners for Freeman Hunt who came up with a sac fly to center.
  • After a tough start Bliss settled in nicely as he posted a scoreless third and fourth which gave his offense a opportunity to get back on the right track. A single for Kyle Bailey and a hit batter of Gartland coupled with a ground out from Conforti had two in scoring position for Freeman Hunt. He notched an RBI single to plate one, while a passed ball with Ben Milligan in the box allowed the go-ahead run to come home.
  • Unfortunately, in the top of the fifth Luke Kopec was hit by a pitch to start things off and then stole second followed by taking third on a balk allowing a groundout for Barrett to tie the game at 3-3. Austin Buzza then took Bliss spot on the hill and got Rosenfeld to ground out for the final out.. Doubles for Will Ferris and Bailey accounted for the Devils fourth of the game. Back-to-back walks from Alex Grehawick to Gartland and Conforti filled the bags, but a ground out by Hunt ended the frame.
  • Dickinson maintained the lead until the seventh when the Bears used four hits to score three times taking a 6-4 edge into the stretch.
  • The last of the eighth was where DC got one run back as a two walks and an error filled the cushions with two down. That brought Dan Bass in from the pen and he walked Ferris to plate one, before getting Bruno to strikeout.
  • A double and single allowed UC to take a two-run advantage into "last call" for Dickinson. With one away a walk to Gartland gave way to an RBI triple from Conforti. Hunt then drove him in with a ground out to second. Ryan O'Connor would strike out swinging for the final out forcing extras.
  • Drew Norton became the third arm of the game and allowed a lead off walk to George Nestor, before retiring the next three he faced which included a sacrifice fly by Callahan. In the Devils half of the tenth, walks to Miguel Reich and Ferris coupled with a single by Dylan Posencheg loaded the bags for Bruno. He would blast the Bass offering off the left-center field wall plating two for the walk-off.

Inside the Game
  • The last of the first was where Dickinson would take the lead for good as Posencheg was hit to start the game, followed by a single for Ferris. Later in the frame a pair of Bears miscues would let both men come in to take a 2-0 lead after one.
  • Dickinson extended their advantage to 3-0 during the third when with one down a single by Bruno and a wild throw left him at second. Two batters later Gartland stroked a two-bagger up the left field line to plate Bruno.
  • On the hill Ben Myers was outstanding for the Devils as he set down 12 of 14 he faced over the first four innings. In the home-half of the fourth Nick Crocona took over on the bump. He immediately ran into some trouble as a walk, error and single had the bags loaded with one out. Ferris then provided a sac fly to right, before Bruno and Bailey picked up back-to-back RBI singles for a 6-0 lead,
  • Myers found himself in a tight spot during the fifth as three straight two out singles filled the pillows with Bears. However, he would get Sullivan to ground out to Milligan at second to retire the side.
  • Each team got on the board in the sixth as Will Marziarz was summoned from the pen and conceded a double and single to first two men he faced to trim the margin to 6-1. Fortunately, his offense was there to pick him up in the home-half when Conforti doubled and Posencheg singled which set the stage for a two-run single up the box from Bruno making it 8-1.
  • After a quiet seventh, Ursinus went to work in the top of the eighth and thanks to five walks, two errors and a hit batter they were able to rack up six runs (8-7) against the pitching trio of Glen Cantalupo Jr., Aidan McElhatton and Michael Niszczak. The ninth began rough for Niszczak as he hit the leadoff batter and walked the second man putting two on with no one out. That brought Dylan Robinson in from the bullpen and he recorded three consecutive ground outs to end the game.
