Devils Take Game Two to Earn Split with Green Terror

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball recorded a split with the visiting McDaniel College on Tuesday to stay in the chase for a Centennial Conference postseason berth with just over a week left in the regular season. First, in game one four defensive miscues cost the Red and White in a 5-4 setback, before righting the ship in game two to notch a 6-3 win at Dickinson Park.

Team Records: Dickinson (9-16, 4-7 CC) | McDaniel (12-16, 4-5 CC)
Pitching Decision: W - Cameron Kelly (8-3) | L - Abby Kohan (4-5)
Inside the Game
  • The visitors were on the board first as two singles, a walk and DC error made it 1-0 leaving runners at second and third. Following a strikeout and popout the second error of the frame allowed two more to cross for a 3-0 lead going to the home half. Dickinson had a quick answer against Cameron Kelly when with gone and one on a double for Erin McMahon along with a single from Marah Goldman cut it down to 3-2. Amelia Plescia then smashed a triple to deep center tying the score after one.
  • The second inning saw the guests pick up two more runs thanks to three hits and another fielding miscue making it 5-3 going to the home-half. With one out, Alex Johnson drew a walk and swiped second base. Unfortunately, ground outs by both Jessie Sandusky and Aubrey Gilbert ended the frame.
  • Devils starter Abby Kohan would then put up a pair of scoreless innings, while offensively during that time Jane Lloyd, McMahon and Johnson worked walks as Aubrey Coyle picked up a single. However, no one was able to get beyond second base as it remained 5-3 into the fifth.
  • The game entered the last of the sixth with Dickinson still trying to erase the two-run deficit. With two down Johnson singled and both Sandusky and Lloyd walked to fill the bags for McMahon. During her at-bat Kelly unleashed a wild pitch allowing Johnson to race home cutting it to 5-4. McMahon than flew out to center killing the rest of the rally.
  • Kohan gave up a couple of base runners in the top of the seventh, but was able to work around them. Then, with DC facing "last call" Goldman grounded out to short on a spectacular play from Taylor Applefeld. Plescia popped up, before Kohan worked a free pass to put the tying run on base for Coyle. She would drive a pitch to deep center but it was run down by Erin Thayer to end the game.

Inside the Game
  • Erin McMahon went to the circle for the top of the an gave up a one-out walk, before setting down the next two. Then, lightning was detected in the area resulting in just over an hour delay prior to the Red and White ever stepping in the box. Unfortunately, coming out of the delay Morgan Rogers setdown the Devils hitters in order moving things to the second.
  • After a quiet first, a single from McMahon gave way to Kohan's 100th hit of her Dickinson career to make it 1-0. A walk to Coyle and fielder's choice for Johnson loaded the bases for Sandusky. She would poke a pitch through the left side pushing the gap to 3-0 through two.
  • Both teams would strike during the third as in the top-half a single for Ally McBride set the stage for an RBI triple by Caitlin Boden trimming the gap to 3-1. Then in the bottom-half, a walk to Lloyd and sac bunt for McMahon had a runner in scoring position with two away. Plescia was then safe on a misplay by the left-fielder allowing Lloyd to race home for a 4-1 lead.
  • After each pitcher went one-two-three during the fourth, a single, walk and an error resulted in one coming around for the Green Terror which forced Emory Hadden to take over in the circle for McMahon. Dickinson tried to get the run back in the home-half, but when with one out and one on McMahon hit into an inning-ending double play.
  • Dickinson would get that run back plus one more in the sixth as Goldman reached on an error by the first baseman allowing a double for Plescia to drive her home. A sac bunt for Kohan moved her to third, before Coyle came up with a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 6-2.
  • McDaniel notched one when facing their final chance, but a strikeout and two ground outs finished off the game.
