Devils Bitten by Golden Wolves in Non-Conference Action

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team was back in action on Thursday afternoon playing their next to last non-conference doubleheader of the season hosting the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University at Dickinson Park. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the guests scored in all but one inning en route to securing a 12-3 win in game one before getting just enough off of Skye Cooke to claim a 2-0 victory.

Game One
Final Score:
Golden Wolves 12, DEVILS 3
Team Records: Dickinson (10-17) | Alvernia (14-17)
Pitching Decision: W - Natalie Berwick (6-7) | L - Erin McMahon (2-9)
Inside the Game
  • Alvernia was on the board just two batters into the game as Alexia Fitzgerald worked a lead off walk against Erin McMahon, before Taylor McClain smacked a single to left making it 1-0. However, Dickinson answered right back when a double for Jane Lloyd and walk to McMahon gave way to Marah Goldman ripping an RBI base hit to right-center leaving the score 1-1 through one.
  • Two singles and a walk loaded the bags for the Wolves in the second with two down. Meryn Bellacima stroked a two-run knock back up the middle to give the guests the lead back at 3-1. McMahon then got Angelina Sponheimer to watch strike three to halt any more damage.
  • It stayed 3-1 until the last of the third when a lead off free pass to Jessie Sandusky set the stage for McMahon to provide an RBI hit into left.
  • The Dickinson bats then went quiet over the next two innings, while during that stretch the visitors picked up two more runs thanks to two hits and one DC miscue.
  • Emory Hadden went to the circle for McMahon to open the sixth looking at a three-run deficit. A walk, single and fielder's choice filled the cushions for Savannah Richards who drove in two (7-2). The Wolves continued to add on using RBIs coming from a ground out, single and error to push the gap to 10-2. Dickinson chipped one off the deficit in the home-half as singles for Abby Kohan and Hadden allowed Goldman to claim her second RBI with a base hit to center.
  • Alvernia picked up two more in the final frame and retired the Red and White in order during the bottom-half to end the game.

Final Score:
Golden Wolves 2, DEVILS 0
Team Records: Dickinson (10-18) | Alvernia (15-17)
Pitching Decision: W - Kelsey Racine (5-8) | L - Skye Cooke (2-2)
Inside the Game
  • For the second straight game it was Alvernia that struck in the first as two singles had runners at first and second with two out for Sponheimer. She stepped up and sent one through the left side to make it 1-0. In the home-half, Sandusky opened up with a single, before three consecutive ground outs closed out the frame.
  • Cooke worked herself into a tight spot during the top of the second when a hit batter, single and walk loaded the bags with two away for Lauren Jascewsky. Cooke bared down and got a pop-up to Kohan at second to retire the side.
  • Dickinson was unable to get their bats going against Kelsey Racine as Aubrey Gilbert and Amelia Plescia each posted a single over the next three innings, but were not able to cross the plate.
  • With the score still at 1-0 heading to the sixth, a walk and single resulted in two on with two out for McClain. She did not get to face Cooke again though as Hadden was once again brought in to provide some late relief. Unfortunately, a pair of DC errors let one score allowing the Wolves to hold a 2-0 edge into the home-half. McMahon provided a two out single in the home-half, but a ground out off of Kohan's bat closed out the inning.
  • Dickinson put two on during the seventh thanks to a base hit for Elizabeth Raefski and walk to Hadden. However, Racine was able to finish off the complete game with ground out.
