Boyd's OT Winner Nudges #11 Devils Past Diplomats

LANCASTER, Pa. - The 11th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team played another down to the wire Centennial Conference game on Wednesday night at Shadek Stadium against Franklin and Marshall College. The host Diplomats were able to erase a three-goal fourth quarter deficit to force bonus lacrosse. Fortunately, for the Red and White, a turnover forced by Luke Whalen just over a minute into the extra session led to Ramsey Huggins connecting with Preston Boyd who did not allow Teddy Scarborough to make his 24th save of the night as the Devils secured a 12-11 victory.

First Quarter
  • It was all about the goalies early in the game as the Devils Rocco Bognet and Teddy Scarborough of F&M combined for six saves over the opening five minutes.
  • Two minutes later Bognet shut the door on Ben Dale allowing Mac Childs to strike unassisted for the game's first marker.
  • Off the ensuing faceoff win by Ryan Backus shots from Ramsey Huggins and Taner Marusa forced another stop out of Scarborough.
  • With 3:53 to play the home side found the back of the cage with Owen Hire finding Mason Montrella.
  • Dickinson recorded the next five shots with attempts out of the sticks of Drew Stark and Marusa solving the keeper in a span of 16-seconds to jump ahead 3-1.
  • Dylan Reese tried to get home side within one heading into the second, but Bognet turned him away.
Second Quarter
  • Chase Squires claimed the opening faceoff resulting in two immediate chances for Marusa which caused Scarborough to record one stop. It was the save that led to Jack Luviano getting the gap to one, before Liam Timmins had things tied just over a minute later.
  • The keepers then continued their good starts as Bognet made two more saves, while Scarborough had the answer for Luke Whalen, Marusa and Stark to keep it at 3-3. The Diplomats rode that momentum to the go-ahead goal courtesy of Carter Connors.
  • About two minutes later Bognet shutdown Dale once again which let Reid Bulger pick up the loose ball and go coast-to-coast for the finish to have it tied at the break.
Third Quarter
  • Scarborough continued to be a thorn in the Devils side early in the period as he denied both Landen Hyatt and Whalen allowing Dale to reclaim the lead for the hosts at the 3:49 mark.
  • However, off a faceoff win by Backus, Huggins buried the rock unassisted to quickly tie things back up (5-5).
  • A stop by Bognet on Dale, set the stage for Caleb Oliver and Huggins to ask questions of Scarborough before Ben Monroe made his way onto the scoresheet for a 6-5 lead.
  • Then, with four minutes to play Huggins jarred the ball free from Ryan Schappell which led to him getting out in transition to find Preston Boyd for the finish (7-5).
  • Tallies from Connors and Preston Blue surrounded a strike for Squires off a dish from Hyatt to leave the Red and White ahead by one heading to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
  • Two straight faceoff wins for Squires led to unassisted markers by Charlie Baughan and Whalen to push the advantage to 10-7 with only 1:43 gone.
  • Huggins attempted to add another to the lead, but Scarborough shut the door allowing Connors and Montrella to respond making it 10-9.
  • With a little over eight minutes remaining Whalen cashed in (11-9). However, the duo of Matt Marino and Connors each recorded a goal in a three-minute span to knot the score at 11-11.
  • The Diplomats had two chances to steal the game in the final ten seconds, but Dale was unable to solve Bognet to force overtime.
Overtime
  • Dickinson controlled the opening faceoff thanks to a win by Backus leading to a DC timeout. Coming out of the break an off-target pass from Tommy Baldini allowed Hire to scoop up the ball and try to start the break. Fortunately, for the Devils Whalen did not give up the fight as he poked it away from Hire which set the stage for Huggins to find Boyd for the winner.
