(Collegeville, Pa.) - The
Dickinson College softball team went 3-0 over the weekend to win
the 2010 Centennial Conference Championship. |
The Red Devils advanced to Sunday's championship game with a 1-0
win over top-seed Ursinus in their first game and a 1-0 victory
over #3-seed Swarthmore. Swarthmore used a no-hitter from senior
Kathryn Riley to eliminate Ursinus on Sunday morning, 1-0.
The Red Devils struck early as Kyrie Budnik
(Northampton, Pa./Northampton) drove in two runs with
two outs in the bottom of the first inning.
Emma Murtaugh (Holmdel,
N.J./Holmdel) singled with two outs
and Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair
Academy) doubled down the left field line. Budnik
then singled to right field to score both runs and put Dickinson on
the board.
Murtaugh launched a shot to right center in the fifth inning and
came around for a triple. Sisco promptly hit a deep fly ball to
right to score Murtaugh with a sacrifice fly.
The Garnet pushed a run across in the top of the sixth. Kate
Smayda singled and stole second, and later scored on a double from
Krista Sheirer.
That would be all the scoring as Allison Jordan
(Medford, N.J./Shawnee) closed the door with a
strikeout. Jordan recorded her sixth strikeout of the game to start
the seventh inning. The defense then recorded the final two outs to
secure the Devils' first Centennial title.
Jordan earned the win, going 3-0 in the tournament. She allowed
just three hits on the day, recording six K's.
The Red Devils improve to 19-17 overall. With the title they
also earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
Announcements will not be made until next weekend.
