(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College softball team swept a double-header from Ursinus College to open Centennial Conference play on Saturday.
The Red Devils worked overtime in game one, pushing across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to claim a 1-0 victory in the opener. Senior Allison Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went the distance, recording 14 strikeouts while scattering four hits.
Senior Emma Murtaugh (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th. Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X) each recorded two hits in the opener.
The Red Devils rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game two, 5-3. Ursinus scored one in the top of the fourth to put a run on the board. The Devils answered with as Murtaugh put a shot over the wall for a homerun.
Jamie Miles recorded a pinch-hit homerun in the top of the sixth to put Ursinus in front, 2-1. Abby Sido came around on back-to-back singles to stretch the lead to 3-1.
Murtaugh doubled in the bottom of the inning and came around on a single from classmate Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy). First-year Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) doubled to score Sisco. Clara Ann Joyce (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) came on a pinch-runner and scored on the next at-bat as Melissa Osborn (Stevensonville, Md./Kent Island) doubled as well.
Senior Ari Coulter (Branford, Conn./Branford) singled to score Osborn to put the Devils in front 5-3.
Jordan came on close the door and earn the save in game two. Homa earned the win, recording four strikeouts.
Murtaugh went 2-for-3 in the second game with an RBI and two runs scored. Sisco and Coulter finished with a pair of hits in the nightcap as well.
The Red Devils improve to 7-9 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to McDaniel College on Tuesday for a 3:00 double-header.
