Devils Advance to Championship, Fall to Mules 4-3

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College softball team survived elimination in game five of the Centennial Conference playoffs on Sunday morning with a 5-2 win over Ursinus College. The Devils then had to beat Muhlenberg twice to defend their title. They pulled in front 3-1, but the Mules rallied for a 4-3 win and the Conference title.

 

The Devils jumped on starting pitcher Jennilyn Weber right off the bat, scoring four runs on four hits in the first inning. Kyrie Budnik (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) woke up everyone with a lead-off double. Senior Emma Murtaugh (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) singled to score Budnik.

 

Senior Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) singled as well and junior Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) drew as walk to load the bases. Sophomore Melissa Osborn (Stevensonville, Md./Kent Island) doubled to the wall in right center, scoring three runs to put the Devils in front, 4-0.

 

Sisco drew a walk and scored on an RBI single from Osborn, giving her four on the day.

 

Kristen Gallagher reached on a single and Sara Sinisi came on the pinch run, scoring on an RBI from Kelli Jerden. Gallagher singled and scored on a fielder's choice of the bat of Jerden in the sixth for the Bears' second run.

 

Senior Allison Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) earned her 13th win of the season, recording five strikeouts and scattering three hits in four innings of work. Classmate Liz Barry (Millis, Mass./Noble & Greenough) came on to finish things off for the final three innings.

 

Osborn drove in four runs behind two hits while Murtaugh went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Budnik added a pair of hits, including the double while Sisco came in for two runs.

 

The Devils advanced to the Championship series with Muhlenberg and would have to beat the Mules twice. They had another strong start, scoring twice in the second inning. Gerish singled and scored on a wild pitch. Osborn reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single from Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X).

 

The Mules used a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt to score one in the fourth inning. Murtaugh answered with a solo homerun to left center to give the Devils a 3-1 advantage.

 

Muhlenberg rallied with three runs in the seventh and held on to capture the title.

 

The Red Devils finish the regular season 20-17 overall.
