(Washington, D.C.) – The Dickinson College women's tennis team opened the 2011-12 season with a 7-2 win at Catholic University on Saturday.
Sophomore Shannon Lavery (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) led the way, claiming points in the top doubles and singles flights. She posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in singles and teamed with senior Brittany Zoll (Malvern, Pa./Shipley) for an 8-4 decision in doubles. Zoll also earned two points in the match, winning the fourth singles flight, 6-0, 6-2.
The Devils led 2-1 after doubles as first-years Sarah Cantor (Providence, R.I.) and Hayley Maxwell (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) recorded an 8-1 victory in the third doubles flight.
Senior Nora Hajnoczky (Wallingford, Conn./Strath Haven) earned a straight set win in the second singles spot, 6-0, 6-3. Dickinson claimed five singles matches as first-years Ilana Unger (Boulder, Colo.) and Dominque Hedderich (Walton, Neb.) added straight set wins in the fifth and singles flights, respectively.
The Red Devils start the year 1-0 while Catholic falls even at 2-2 overall. Dickinson returns home to host East Stroudsburg on October 4th and Wilkes University on October 13th.
