(Huntingdon, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team took an early lead and tried to rally late, but suffered a 3-2 setback at Juniata College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Devils struck first as senior Alex Boorse (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) put the Devils on the board, scoring off an assist from first-year Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary), 12:22 into the contest.
The Eagles answered late in the half to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Caroline Phillips tied the game with 7:14 to play in the half, scoring off a penalty corner from the top of the circle with an assist from Sara Bilheimer.
Juniata pulled in front, scoring on a fast-break with 5:27 on the clock as Kortney Showers tallied her first goal of the season, off an assist from Emma Dahmus.
The Eagles were efficient in the first half, taking just three shots as the Devils recorded six in the opening 35 minutes, forcing Janelle Howard to make four saves. The Devils also held a slim edge in a relatively penalty free first half, forcing three corners while surrendering just a pair.
Juniata drew a pair of corners early in the second half, but the defense held behind a shot off the post and a save from junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends), leading to a fast-break as the Red Devils countered. Senior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annadale) fired a shot from just inside the circle that went just wide of the cage.
They Eagles would capitalize on another corner later, however, as Phillips scored her second of the game with 26:18 remaining.
The Red Devils kept the pressure on, looking to create scoring opportunities. They forced a corner that led to a pair of saves for Howard. The Devils would break through later, however, scoring with 3:43 remaining to pull within a goal. First-year Alyssa Stillwell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) deflected a long pass from Bellingham into the upper left corner of the cage.
They forced another corner with 1:49 on the clock but Howard turned away a shot by sophomore Natalie Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) to preserve the lead.
Juniata gained possession and held on, forcing a corner with no time remaining. Karwel picked-up a defensive save, making a great play on the Devils' goal line. The Eagles forced a second corner, but the defense was able to hold once again for the 3-2 final.
Howard finished with seven saves as Juniata improved to 8-9 overall.
Schlechtweg stopped a pair of shots in the second half. The Devils held an 11-8 edge in shots while the Eagles forced eight corners and allowed six on the defensive end.
The Devils slip to 7-10 overall. They return home for the season finale on Saturday, hosting #5-ranked Franklin & Marshall at 11:00 am.
