(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College softball team rallied twice but suffered similar results, falling to visiting Susquehanna University by identical 8-6 scores in a Tuesday night double-header.
Junior infielder Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X) had the highlight of the night with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two.
The Crusaders jumped on the board immediately, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Five hits and a pair of errors put the Devils down early. They answered right away, scoring one in the bottom of the inning.
Bruke Mikesell (Columbia, Md./Howard) singled and moved to third on an error as Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) reached on a mishandled sacrifice bunt.
The Devils added three runs in the fourth. Senior Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) reached on a mishandled shot to short and scored the Devils' first of the inning. Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) singled and Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.
Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) lined a ball to third. The Crusaders went home but Gerish was safe at the plate. First-year Stephanie Hammond (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) drew an RBI walk and Mikesell added an RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Susquehanna answered, pushing two across in the fifth inning. Abell came around to score off the bat of Rachel Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) in the seventh for the final of 8-6.
The Crusaders opened with another big first inning, scoring three runs behind a triple and a double to take an early lead.
Brittany Devlin cleared the bases with a double to stretch the lead to 6-0 in the third. Gerish reached on a walk and scored off the bat of Carly Jordan in the fifth to put the Devils on the board.
The Crusaders added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and they would be crucial. Osborn reached on an error and scored on another to make the score 6-2. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Haines, who launched a two-out bomb over the wall in centerfield.
That would be the final, 8-6, as Susquehanna held on for the win. Mikesell went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the opener while Swade added a pair of hits and Abell scored twice.
Mikesell and Gerish added hits in the nightcap as Sarah Hoffman held the Red Devils to just three hits. Haines added the other with her four-run homer.
The Red Devils slip to 4-10 on the season. They travel to Messiah College on Thursday for a 3:00 pm double-header.
