(Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson College softball team split a Centennial Conference double-header at Haverford on Saturday. The Red Devils won the opener, 3-0, but dropped a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.
Junior shortstop Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) homered over the center field fence to put the Devils on the board in the second inning.
First-year Erin Owens (Fayetteville, Ga./Woodward Academy) drove in classmates Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Stephanie Hammond (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) in the third inning.
Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Puis X) and Swade each went 2-for-4 while Haines added a double. Sophomore Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) tossed a two-hitter, recording seven strikeouts and allowing just one walk.
Haverford claimed the nightcap, escaping with a 6-5 decision. The Devils scored one in the first but the 'Fords answered with two in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the third. The Devils got one back in the top of the fourth but Haverford answered again, scoring two more to lead 6-2 at the end of the fourth.
The Devils pushed across two more in the fifth and came within a run with another in the top of the seventh.
Owens went 2-for-2 in game two while Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. First-year Jay Abell (Glen Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Osborn drew a pair of walks and scored twice in the nightcap.
Homa added six strikeouts in 3.2 innings in game two. Katri Thiele (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) added three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
The Red Devils stand at 5-15 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Frostburg State University on April 7th at 5:00 pm.
