(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College softball team split a Centennial Conference double-header with visiting Gettysburg on a chilly Tuesday evening at Dickinson Park.
The Red Devils captured the opener with a 3-0 decision behind eight strikeouts from sophomore pitcher Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton), posting a three-hit shutout.
Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) drew a lead-off walk and Bruke Mikesell (Columbia, Md./Howard) reached on a fielder's choice to start the game. They would both come around to score on RBIs from Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St.Pius X) and Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) to put the Devils in front, 2-0, in the first inning.
First-year Erin Owens (Fayetteville, Ga./Woodward Academy) singled and scored on an RBI from Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) in the third inning to add another insurance run. That would be all they would need as Homa held the Bullets to just three hits and four base runners in the opener.
Gettysburg used a sacrifice fly and a double from Maggie Maguire to push across a pair of runs in the first inning of game two. Maguire drove in another run in the fifth to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Bullet bats came alive in the sixth as they tacked on six more with a seven-hit inning. Lindsey Treanor earned the win in the circle, holding the Devils to just a pair of hits in the nightcap. She recorded just one strikeout and allowed three walks, but solid defense held the shutout.
First-year Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Gerish recorded the hits for the Devils in game two.
The Red Devils slip to 7-19 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Thursday, hosting Alvernia in a double-header at 5:00 pm.
