(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College softball team split a Centennial Conference doubleheader with visiting Muhlenberg on Tuesday night. The Red Devils captured game one, 1-0, but the Mules answered with a 9-2 decision in the nightcap.
Sophomore Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) earned the win in the opener, recording seven strikeouts in a four-hit shutout.
Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) led-off the sixth inning with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and came in to score on an RBI single from first-year Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) for the lone run of the game. Abell went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one.
The Mules struck quickly, pushing across two runs in the first inning behind three hits and a sacrifice fly. They tacked on four in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 6-0.
The Devils used the long ball to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jordan doubled and came in to score on triple down the right field line by Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X). Haines would come in to score off the bat of Gerish to cut the lead to 6-2.
Muhlenberg added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh for the final of 9-2. Jordan went 2-for-3 in the nightcap to lead the Devils at the plate while Gerish added a double in the fourth but was stranded on third.
The Red Devils stand at 10-22 overall and 6-6 in the Centennial Conference while Muhlenberg moves to 14-15 and 8-4 in the CC. The Red Devils travel to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, then to Ursinus for a make-up date on Sunday afternoon in Collegeville.
