(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson field hockey team continued its assault on the Centennial Conference and the school record books, setting a number of new single season marks in a 3-1 win at Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night.
The Blue Jays struck first as Lucy Woodrow scored in the 13th minute, netting her first goal of the season off an assist from Maddie Fryer.
The Red Devils answered four minutes later on a goal from first-year Erica Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) to pull the Devils even in the 17th minute. Marshall tallied her eighth goal of the season, finding the cage with an assist from former high school teammate Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest).
Dickinson took the lead off the stick of first-year Maddie Groves (Acton, Mass./Lawrence Academy), just three minutes later. Groves finished an assist from sophomore Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) to put the Devils on top, 2-1.
First-year scoring leader Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) stretched the margin to 3-1, netting her 11th goal of the season with just under five minutes remaining in the half.
That would close out the scoring as the teams played scoreless for the remainder of the contest. The Red Devils did, however, break the single season scoring record, raising their total to 45 on the year. That replaces the previous mark of 44, set just last season.
The Devils also set school records for points in a season with 120 while extending their program-best winning streak to 10 straight games.
The Red Devils held a 19-11 advantage in shots, holding a 10-6 edge in penalty corners. Hopkins goaltender Zoey Atabek made 10 saves on the night while three Blue Jays added defensive saves as well.
Senior Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made five saves for the Red Devils.
Perlmutter also set the school record for points by a first-year, raising her single season total to 26, behind 11 goals and four assists. Lisa Mills '88 set the previous mark of 25 (12g, 1a), in her rookie campaign in 1985.
Dickinson improves to 11-2 overall and remain unbeaten in Centennial Conference play at 7-0 on the year. Hopkins falls to 5-8 and 3-4 in the CC. The Red Devils return home for another key Centennial Conference match-up, hosting Ursinus College at 12:00 pm on Saturday.
