(Tucson, Ariz.) – The Dickinson softball team split a pair of games to open spring break play in Arizona on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 setback to Baldwin-Wallace University and claimed a 4-2 victory over Edgewood College.
Baldwin-Wallace used three hits, including a pair of doubles to put a run on the board in the first inning. Lauren Feciuch started the inning off with a double and later came around to score off the bat of Tabitha Murray. She reached on an error in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly, giving Murray her second RBI of the game.
The Red Devils threatened in the sixth inning as Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) recorded back-to-back singles, and senior Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X) reached on a walk to load the bases. The Yellow Jackets held on, however, to win their season opener.
Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) added a double for the Red Devils. Junior Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) suffered the loss, despite a solid effort in the circle. She recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just five hits and one earned run.
Murray earned the win, holding the Devils to just five hits, adding 11 strikeouts on the day.
The Red Devils rebounded to post a 4-2 win over Edgewood on Sunday. The Devils used a four-hit inning to put three runs on the board in the third. Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, Pa./Robbinsville) led things off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from Abell.
First-year Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) singled to left field, scoring Abell. She would come in to score, capitalizing on an error off the bat of Jordan.
Edgewood answered with lone runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Haines reached on an error in the sixth and Stephanie Hammond (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) added another run for the Devils, coming on to pinch-run.
First-year Micki Crouch (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) went six innings to earn the win, recording a pair of strikeouts. Classmate Cassie Blyler (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) came on to earn the save.
The Red Devils stand at 1-3 on the season. They are scheduled to face Chatham University and Marian College on Monday.
