Blue Jays Slip Past Red Devils, 5-4

 

 

(Elizabethtown, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's tennis team, ranked 17th in the Atlantic South Region, dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to #12-ranked Elizabethtown on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Red Devils held a 2-1 lead after doubles. Alysia Rodgers (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and Shannon Lavery (Huntington, W. Va./Huntington) posted an 8-2 win in the top flight.

 

Sarah Cantor (Providence, R.I./The Wheeler School) and Sydney Diamond (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) captured the point in the third flight, 9-8 (9-7).

 

Rodgers and Lavery added wins in the top two singles flights but the Blue Jays rallied for the win, taking the final four singles matches. Rodgers overcame a tough opening set to win (0-6, 6-2, 6-2) while Lavery claimed the second flight in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

 

Madeline Altholtz (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) battled in the five spot, falling 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 and Dominique Hedderich (Walton, Neb./Choate Rosemary Hall) challenged for the sixth flight, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

 

The Blue Jays improve to 5-1 on the season while the Devils fall to 1-6. Dickinson returns home to host Washington College on Saturday 12:00 pm.
