Ducks Escape Carlisle With One Point Win Over Devils

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's tennis team faced their second straight tough regional challenge in less than 24 hours on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology to the Hays Tennis Courts. Unfortunately, for the Red and White despite playing the six singles matches to a stalemate the Ducks took advantage of doubles to come away with the 4-3 non-conference win.

Doubles (Ducks 2-1 | Count as one point in team score)
The match opened up with the second pair of Anabel Romero Gemmell and Loretta Szych holding off Gigi Arenas-Stephanie Untermeyer by a score of 6-4. Stevens evened things with a 6-3 win on the three line thanks to Alix Dry and Kaylee Hobbick besting Chloe Heller-Alisa Steele. The Ducks then locked up the doubles point in the first slot as Wei-Wei Lai and Lorena Piegas suvived a strong effort from Natasha Sharnoff-Merve Uyumazturk 6-4.

Singles (Tied 3-3)
Dickinson leveled the match quickly with a 6-3, 6-1 victory for Romero Gemmell over Arenas at six. They then took the lead when Uyumazturk knocked off Untermeyer by scores of 7-5, 6-2 in the third flight. Lai brought the Ducks even by besting Heller (4th) (7-6, 6-1). Dry would hold on for a first set win over Steele (1st) in a tiebreak (7-4), before taking the second 6-1. Stevens assured themselves of the match win with a victory at five where Hobbick edged out Szych (6-3, 2-6, 6-2). Sharnoff ended things on a high note for the Red and White by knocking off Piegas in a third set super tiebreak (10-5) to set the 4-3 final.

Dickinson (11-6) gets back to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, April 18th when they visit Swarthmore College for a 2:30pm first serve.
