Women's Tennis Wins Conference Opener Over Washington

 

 

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's tennis team opened Centennial Conference play with a thrilling 5-4 victory over visiting Washington College on Saturday.

 

The Red Devils captured first and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead. Alysia Rodges (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and Shannon Lavery (Huntington, W. Va./Huntington) claimed the top spot, 8-4. Lavery earned her second point of the day, winning the second singles flight, 6-2, 6-2. Rodgers battled through three sets before suffering a 5-7, 7-6(7-3), 6-2 setback in the top singles flight.

 

Sarah Cantor (Providence, R.I./The Wheeler School) and Sydney Diamond (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) were 8-3 winners in the third doubles flight while Diamond added another key point for the Devils in the third singles flight, talking the match, 6-2, 6-2.

 

Sophomore Dominique Hedderich (Walton, Neb./Choate Rosemary Hall) captured the final point for the Devils in the sixth singles flight, posting a 6-1, 6-0 decision.

 

The Red Devils improved to 2-6 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Wednesday, hosting defending champ, Johns Hopkins, at 3:30 pm.
