(Huntington, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team went extra Innings, sweeping a double-header at Juniata College on Thursday. The Red Devils won the opener, 3-0, and claimed the nightcap, 2-1, in nine innings.
Junior Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits to earn the shutout.
Sophomore Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro).
Swade scored on an RBI single from Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) put the Devils on the board in the third inning.
The Red Devils added a pair of runs in the fifth, capitalizing on three Juniata errors. Ditzler singled with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. She came in to score as Edelson reached on an error.
Senior Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) reached on an error as well, scoring Edelson for the Devils' third run.
Ditzler went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Devils at the plate.
Juniata struck quickly in game two, scoring on the bottom of the first inning. Edeslon singled and scored on a wild pitch, after moving to third on an error.
Ditzler was placed on second in the ninth inning as part of the tiebreaker. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Osborn and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X).
Cassie Blyler (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) earned the complete game win, recording two strikeouts and an assist in the bottom of the ninth. She finished with four strikeouts in the game, scattering five hits and allowing just one walk.
Edelson went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the nightcap while Haines went 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI.
The Red Devils improve to 11-17 on the season. They return home to face Swarthmore College on Saturday. The double-header will be part of the StikeOut Cancer Challege. Join the Red Devils in the fight to find a cure for cancer. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
