(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team dropped a pair of games in a double-header at Muhlenberg College. The Mules took an early lead and held on for a 4-2 decision in the opener and claimed the nightcap, 6-3, on Tuesday.
The Mules struck early, taking a 4-0 lead before the Devils pushed a run across in the top of the fifth. Brittany Dzieciolowski doubled to score a run and Taylor Trifiolis added an RBI to put the hosts on board, 2-0, in bottom of the first inning.
A bases loaded walk led to another Muhlenberg run in the second, and Erica Wetzel came across on a double-steal in the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Sophomore Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) drew a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) to put the Devils on the board in the top of the fifth.
Three singles in the sixth led to another Red Devil run as sophomore Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) reached on a hit, moved to second on a single from Swade and scored on an RBI from first-year Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) to pull the Devils within a pair, 4-2.
The Devils held on the bottom half of the inning and looked to tie things up in their final at bat. The Mules held, however, forcing a fly out and two ground outs to end the inning and game one.
Swade and Ditzler went 2-for-3 in the opener, as did senior Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee). Junior Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) suffered the loss, scattering six hits and recording three strikeouts.
Alyssa Schell went 2-for-4 to lead Muhlenberg while Kelsey Jones earned the win for the Mules.
Kline homered to put the Mules on the board in the first inning of game two. The Red Devils took the lead in the top of the third, scoring two runs with two outs.
Edelson singled, Osborn doubled and senior Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Puis X) drove in both with a double to left field.
The Mules answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, 4-2. Muhlenberg tallied five hits in the inning, scoring two runs on a double from Dzieciolowski.
Muhlenberg added a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and tacked on another in the sixth to take a 6-2 advantage.
Swade singled, stole second and scored on a double from Osborn in the top of the seventh, but the Mules held on for the win.
Osborn finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Haines finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Edelson went 2-for-4 in the nightcap as well.
The Red Devils slip to 13-19 overall and 4-8 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
