(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team split a Centennial Conference double-header with Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils claimed the opener, 4-0, but dropped the nightcap, 7-2.
Junior Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) recorded 13 strikeouts in to win game one, throwing a four-hit shutout.
Sophomore Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and first-year Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) reached on singles, and both came in to score on a single from senior Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island).
Ditzler doubled to lead-off the fifth inning and Osborn drew a walk. After first-year Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) reached on a walk, the Devils saw RBIs from a Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) single and a sacrifice fly by Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro).
Ditzler went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored to lead the Devils at the plate, while Osborn finished with a pair of RBIs.
The Diplomats took a 2-0 lead in game two, scoring unearned runs in the first and second innings. They added four in the fourth to stretch the lead to 6-0. Danielle Murphy had a two-run double while Sam DeNoville drove in a pair with a single.
Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) doubled in the fourth to start things for the Red Devils. She came in to score off the bat of Piet. Jordan reached on a fielder's choice and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Abel to put the Devils on the scoreboard.
Murphy scored again in the sixth after reaching on a single and stealing second. She moved to third on a base-hit and scored the final run on a wild pitch.
Garlinger went 2-for-3 in game two. Megan O'Neill (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) came on in the third inning and added a single and a double. Sophomore Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) added a pair of hits as well.
Homa added five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of game two. Cassie Blyler (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) tallied four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief.
The Red Devils stand at 14-20 on the year and 5-9 in the Centennial Conference. They are scheduled to travel to McDaniel on Tuesday before returning home to face Albright College on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
