(Allentown, Pa.) – The #20-ranked Dickinson field hockey team saw its nine-game winning streak snapped as Muhlenberg escaped with a 3-2 win in overtime on Saturday.
The Red Devils suffer just their second loss of the season, slipping to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference.
The Mules capitalized on a slow start by the Devils, scoring just 1:08 into the contest. Samantha Swire picked up a rebound and put the ball in the cage to give the Mules an early lead.
They almost matched that feat in the second half, striking again quickly to stretch the lead to 2-0. Lauren Jordan scored off an assist from Kayleigh Thiess, just 1:18 after the break.
The Red Devils would rally however, netting back-to-back goals in a span of just 37 seconds to pull even in the 43rd minute. The Red Devils capitalized on a penalty corner as sophomore Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) fired a shot from the top of the circle off an insert assist from first-year Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) to put the Devils on the board.
Less than a minute later, senior Ali Becker (Spring House, Pa./Germantown Academy) won possession in front of the cage and tied the game, giving the Red Devils new life with 27:04 remaining in regulation.
The score remained tied, sending the game into overtime. The Mules capitalized once again, as Gwen Remaley converted a penalty stroke with just 2:22 gone in the first overtime to claim the win, 3-2.
The Mules held the advantage, statistically, outshooting the Devils 20-5 and holding a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.
Junior Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made three saves in goal for Dickinson before first-year Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) came in to make six saves on the day.
Sierra Lenker made a pair of saves to earn the win for Muhlenberg as they improve to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The Red Devils are on the road again on Wednesday, traveling to McDaniel College for a 4:30 pm start.
