Red Devil Softball Sweeps Swarthmore 4-0, 4-3

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team swept a double-header from Swarthmore College on Saturday, posting a 4-0 shutout in the opener, and holding on for a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

Senior Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) threw both ends of the twin-bill, recording a bases-loaded strikeout to end game two.

Sophomore Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./North Carroll) drove in two runs while first-year Michelle Orden (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) added an RBI single to put the Red Devils on the board in the top of the second inning.

Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) tacked on a solo homerun in the third to give Dickinson a 4-0 advantage.

Homa scattered three hits and allowed just one walk in a complete game effort. She recorded six strikeouts in the opener as well.

Swarthmore struck early in game two, capitalizing on a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to score a run in the first inning.

The Red Devils took the lead in the top of the second. Orden added two more RBIs as Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) and Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) reached on an error and a single.

Orden led-off the sixth with a single. She came in to score on an RBI from Maring for a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore shortstop Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) doubled and scored on a single from Megan O'Neill (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme).

The Garnet tried to rally, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3. Swarthmore loaded the bases but Homa closed the door with a strikeout to complete the sweep.

Orden led the way at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Maring went 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

The Red Devils improve to 8-18 on the season and 4-8 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg College on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
