(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team had a lot of offense on Wednesday night, splitting a non-conference double-header with visiting Elizabethtown. On a chilly evening at Dickinson Park the bats were hot as the teams combined for 40 hits in the twin-bill.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first to open game one. Junior Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) launched a three-run bomb over the fence to put the Devils on the board.
Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) reached on a walk in the second and moved to second on an error off the bat of Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock). Sophomore Michelle Orden (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) loaded the bases with a walk to set up a sacrifice fly opportunity for Nicole Torlincasi (King's Park, N.Y./King's Park).
Edelson singled to drive in Swade, stretching the lead to 5-0. The Devils tried to manufacture a run with a double-steal but the Elizabethtown defense was able to secure the out before the run scored.
The Blue Jays carried the momentum into the top of the third, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to one. Jordan Nowacki hit a three-run double and came around on a double from Jessica White. Both teams went three-up, three-down in the next half inning.
The Devils came alive with four runs in the fourth to extend the margin to 9-4. Lindsey Zwecker (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) reached on one error and scored on another to start the rally. Piet singled and stole second. Torlincasi reached on a walk and stole second to put runners on the back side for Edelson. She delivered with her fifth RBI of the game.
Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) doubled to swap places with Edelson and give the Devils a 9-1 lead. Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) led-off the fifth with a walk. Back-to-back singles from Zwecker and Piet loaded the bases.
Swade reached as the Blue Jays opted for a force out at home. Zwecker would make her way home on the next at-bat as Orden hit a sacrifice fly to right for the Devils' 10th run.
Becky Becker and Keli Krause led-off the seventh with back-to-back singles. White and Kaylee Werner added RBI singles to tally the final two runs for the final of 10-6.
Emily Rosenberg (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) improved to 7-1 on the season, recording four strikeouts in a complete game effort. Edelson tallied five RBIs, scoring two runs behind three hits, including her 10th career homerun.
Piet went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Swade, Torlincasi and Zwecker all scored twice as well.
Becher went 3-for-4, scoring twice while White did the same to drive in a pair of runs. Krause slipped to 1-2 while the Blue Jays fell to 5-7.
The Blue Jays turned the tables in the nightcap, opening with a six run inning, behind a two-run homer from Kirstin Blass.
Dickinson countered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Swade reached on an error that put her on second. She came around on another error, off a sacrifice bunt attempt from Orden. Edelson added another RBI to her resume', scoring Orden on a base hit.
Ditzler turned on a pitch and went over the fence with a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 6-4. A wild pitch led to a run in the third and Blass added an RBI, scoring game two pitcher Laura Tomasetti for an 8-4 advantage.
Tomasetti and catcher Kelsey Brown each drove in two runs with a double and single for a dangerous, 12-4 spread. After Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) was hit by a pitch, Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) pinch-ran and came around to score to cut the lead to seven.
Diztler drove in Orden to make the score, 12-6, at the end of the fourth. The Devils held in the fifth and sixth and came a little closer on a solo shot from Torlincasi to start the sixth. The Blue Jays tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh behind another RBI double from Tomasetti, for the final of 14-7.
Brown went 4-for-5 with three RBIs while Tomasetti accounted for seven runs with four RBIs and three runs scored behind two doubles, a single and a fielder's choice.
Ditzler led the Devils, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Swade added three hits and reached on an error, scoring a run, and Torlancasi finished with a triple and a homerun.
The Red Devils stand at 11-4 overall. They return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, traveling to Haverford College for a 1:00 pm start.
