(Myrtle Beach, S.C.) – The Dickinson softball team is off to a great start to the 2015 season, winning its first two games in Myrtle Beach.
The Red Devils opened with a 6-4 win against Bridgewater College from Virginia. The Eagles used a lead-off double and a triple to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The Red Devils erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead.
Junior Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) led-off the inning with a walk, followed by singles from Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) and Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) to load the bases.
Sophomore Nicole Torlincasi (King's Park, N.Y./King's Park) double to left, bringing in two runs. Senior Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) singled to score two more runs and classmate Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Pa./Elizabeth Seton) sacrificed in another to put Dickinson in front, 5-1.
Brooke Throckmorton doubled to score two runs, cutting the deficit to 5-3, in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Nyquist led-off the fifth with a single and moved to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. She came in to score to pull Bridgewater within one.
Abel singled to start the seventh and came in to give the Devils an insurance run, scoring off the bat of Edelson as she singled for the second time in the game.
The Devils held in the bottom half of the inning for the final of 6-4. Edelson and Piet each went 2-for-4 while Torlincasi and Garlinger each recorded a pair of RBIs. First-year Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) earned the win in her first collegiate start while classmate Emily Rosenberg Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) came on to record the save.
The Red Devils improved to 2-0 with a 2-1 victory over Penn College. Edelson launched a two-out, two-run bomb, scoring Diztler, who reached with a double.
Rosenberg improved to 2-0 with a complete game effort, scattering six hits and striking out five. Shelby Lyter recorded seven strikeouts in a losing effort for Penn.
The Red Devils are in action again on Tuesday, facing SUNY Polytechnic and Iowa Wesleyan.
