(Huntington, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team swept a non-conference double-header from Juniata College on Thursday afternoon. The Devils rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener and claimed a one-run decision in the nightcap, 4-3.
The Red Devils put three runs across in the top of the third inning. Junior Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) hit a two-out single to keep the inning alive. Classmate Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) walked and Lindsey Zwecker (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) doubled to put Dickinson on the board.
First-year Alicia Lane (Bolton, Mass./Garaway) followed up with a single to drive in two more runs for a 3-0 advantage.
Juniata answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Holly Bettinger reached on a fielder's choice and scored after a double and single from Kerigan Ammerman and Lindsey Kosicki. Chrissy Lerchen singled to score Kosicki to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Red Devils tallied another in the top of the fifth after a lead-off double from sophomore Nicole Torlincasi (King's Park, N.Y./King's Park). Torlincasi stole third and came in to score off the bat of Ditzler for a 4-2 advantage.
The Eagles pulled even in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Kosicki, after Ammerman reached on a two-out single. Torlincasi gave the Devils in the lead with a solo shot in the top of the seventh, putting Dickinson in front, 5-4.
That would be enough as the Devils stranded Eagles on first and third in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. First-year Emily Rosenberg (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) earned the win in the circle with a complete game effort. She improves to 8-4 on the season.
Torlincasi went 2-for-3 in the opener with two runs scored, a stolen base and the RBI behind a double and a homerun. Lane tallied a pair of RBIs, earning the start at third base.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off a rally for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Dickinson scored three runs in the third inning. Torlincasi reached on an error and advanced to second. She came in to score as Edelson doubled to put the Devils on the board.
Ditzler singled and came in with Edelson on a two-RBI base hit from Zwecker. Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) reached on an error and came in to score on another run-producing knock from Torlincasi.
Paige Dennison triple in the bottom of the fourth and scored off a single from Bellinger. Kosicki came through again, scoring pinch-runner Kassandra Toffolla, to cut the lead in half. Brooke Ridenour singled to lead-off the fifth inning. She moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a passed ball. She would come in to score on a single from Katie Schroeder.
The Devils closed the door and held on for the sweep. Ditzler went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to lead the Devils. Zwecker finished with two RBIs with Torlincasi and Edleson driving in runs as well.
Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) went five innings to earn the win, recording three strikeouts. Rosenberg came on for the final two innings for the save.
The Red Devils improve to 13-12 overall. They return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, hosting Swarthmore College at 1:00 pm.
