(Winchester, Va.) – The Dickinson field hockey team worked overtime to come out on top of an intense battle at Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon, winning 3-2.
The first half was back and forth with both teams moving up and down the field. The host Hornets struck first, scoring eight minutes into the contest as Kayla Alderman opened the scoring with an unassisted goal.
The Red Devils had a strong chance, coming out of transition, but Shenandoah was able to stall the break. Dickinson would capitalize on a penalty corner opportunity as first-year Jamie Wright (Reston, Va./Herndon) tallied her first collegiate goal, finishing an assist from classmate Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard), with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
The score would remain tied as the teams headed into halftime. The Hornets held a slight advantage in shots, 11-4, and corners, 5-3.
Dickinson went on top in the 62nd minute as first-year Kayla Bendinelli (Princeton, N.J./Montgomery) rattled the cage with an assist from senior Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
Shenandoah answered just under five minutes later as the match continued to move from one end of the field to the other. Whitney Ross pulled the Hornets even, scoring off an assist from Kelani Bailey with 3:14 to play in regulation.
The Hornets gained possession early in overtime but sophomore goaltender Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) came up with a huge save on a shot by Alderman to keep the Devils even.
Junior Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) received a pass from classmate Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) and flicked the ball over the head of charging goaltender Jessica Brown to give the Red Devils the win.
The match was about as balanced as it could be, statistically, with Shenandoah holding the edge in shots, 19-18. Dickinson forced seven penalty corners in the second half as the teams finished even with 10 each.
Brown tallied seven saves on the afternoon while Alana Meadows added a defensive save for the Hornets. They slip to 1-3 on the season.
Bancroft made four saves, including her biggest of the game in overtime. The Red Devils improve to 4-0 overall, winning their second overtime game of the season. They open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, traveling to Haverford College for a 12:00 pm start.
