(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team came away with a sweep of Swarthmore on Saturday, claiming the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings. The Red Devils won the opener 6-2 with a five-run rally in the top of the seventh inning.
Swarthmore scored lone runs in the second and third to lead 2-0, heading into the fifth inning. Sophomore Alicia Lane (Bolton, Mass./Garaway) singled and came in to score on a triple from junior Nicole Torlincasi (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) to cut the deficit to one.
The Red Devils capitalized on a pair of Swarthmore errors and two-run homer by senior Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) to overtake the Garnet for a 6-2 victory.
Edelson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Torlincasi and Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison) each recorded a pair of hits as well. First-year Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) tossed a complete game effort to earn the win.
First-year Marissa Ruschil (Katonah, N.Y./St. Luke's, Conn.) doubled to lead-off the second inning of game two and scored as Torlincasi reached on an error. Lane drew a walk and made it to third to set up a sacrifice fly for Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) to give Dickinson a 2-0 lead.
Junior Michelle Orden (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) singled in the top of the fourth and put another Dickinson run on the board when she scored on another RBI for Edelson.
Lane singled in the fifth and this time would score as Torlincasi doubled to left to stretch the margin to 4-0. Ruschil doubled in the seventh but was left stranded.
The Garnet rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. A lead-off double and an error put two runners on and a single loaded the bases. Another single and a walk led to a pair of Swarthmore runs and a two-RBI single from Elizabeth Curcio tied the game, forcing extra innings.
Orden singled and moved to second on an error to lead off the eight. Piet sacrificed her over to third, setting up an RBI for Edelson to put the Devils back on top, 5-4. The Devils held in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep.
Edelson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two as well while Lane finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ruschil added a pair of doubles and Orden tallied two hits and reached on a walk and after being hit by a pitch. Torlincasi reached three times in the nightcap.
Killian Kueny (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) recorded five strikeouts in six innings before Milaszewski came on to earn the win, throwing the final two innings.
