Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team came up short in an overtime thriller in its home opener in Wednesday, falling to York College, 5-4. Sophomore Lindsay Nye tallied the game-winner, scoring off a rebound, 1:05 into overtime.
Nye, who earned Capital Athletic Conference Co-Rookie of the Year honors last fall, tallied all five goals for the Spartans who improve to 3-0 on the young season.
The Red Devils used a strong start to take a 2-0 lead in the first half, controlling possession in the early minutes. Sophomore Taylor Bednar (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) struck first, scoring off an assist from classmate Julia Murphy (Greenwood Village, Colo./Colorado Academy), just 3:42 into the contest.
The Red Devils went up, 2-0, capitalizing on a penalty corner as Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) redirected a shot off the stick of Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) with her third goal of the season.
Nye put the Spartans on the board in the 26th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with an assist from Ali Posey. Posey lofted a shot into the upper corner of the cage and Nye tapped it in. Nye broke free and tallied the equalizer with just under three minutes to play in the half.
The Red Devils regained the lead to start the second half as junior Danielle Schwab (Highland, Md./River Hill) collected a rebound and found the back of the cage to give the Devils a 3-2 advantage.
Nye countered with back-to-back goals to give York its first lead of the game, with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Red Devils continued to battle, pulling even just under five minutes to play as Kramer redirected another shot by Dey that would eventually force overtime.
The Red Devils had a strong chance early in the extra frame but York gained possession and countered with a fast break. Autumn Mallory chased down a lead pass and went right to the cage. Her shot was saved by junior goaltender Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), but the rebound went right to the stick of Nye for the game-winner.
Bancroft came away with some outstanding saves throughout the game, finishing with 14 on the afternoon.
Eve Haultle made four saves for York with Nye netting five goals to lead the attack.
Kramer tallied two goals and an assist with Dey handing out two assists. Junior Kim Monteferante(Putman Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) was solid on the defense while Schwab proved to be very disruptive in the midfield, not allowing York any easy clears.
The Red Devils (1-2) return to action next Tuesday, hosting Shenandoah University at 4:00 pm.
