Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team went back and forth with visiting Washington & Lee on Friday, but the Generals tallied a pair of late goals to claim a 5-3 decision.
Junior Haley Tucker put W&L on the board first, making a move on the end line and finding the net with 23:23 remaining in the first half.
The Red Devils answered, scoring twice in a span of 58 seconds to take a 2-1 lead with six minutes to play in the first half. Junior Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown-Beard) served a great ball across the front of the cage and first-year Emma Godfrey (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) had a great look at the goal to pull the Devils even.
Kramer put the Red Devils in front, redirecting a shot from Olivia Young (Orrtanna, Pa./Gettysburg) at the 5:52 mark.
Senior Maggie Sands tied the game with just over four minutes to play in the half and the teams would go into the break, knotted, 2-2.
Tucker tallied again to start the second half, scoring off an assist from sophomore Lauren Paolano to put the Generals back in front.
Dickinson capitalized on a penalty corner as sophomore Mia Scott (Mount Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) tipped in a blast from first-year Marie Laverdiere (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) to level the match, 3-3, with 20:31 remaining in regulation.
Tucker tallied an assist to Paolano and then scored an insurance goal, just seconds later to give the visitors a 5-3 advantage, with nine minutes on the clock.
The Red Devils continued to press on the offensive end and forced a pair of late penalty corners but were unable to cut into the deficit.
Washington & Lee outshot the Red Devils, 18-11, and held a 12-8 advantage on penalty corners, despite the Dickinson holding a 7-1 edge in the second half.
Ariyel Yavalar made five saves to earn the win as W&L improves to 9-4 on the season.
Senior Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) turned away nine shots on the day while first-year Emily Mycek (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) cleared a defensive save off the line in the early minutes of the match.
The Red Devils slip to 6-6 overall. They return to Centennial Conference action tomorrow, traveling to Bryn Mawr College for a 12:00 pm start.
