Red Devils Split Matches, Top Morningside 7-2

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Wednesday, falling to Division II Bloomsburg University before rebounding with a 7-2 decision over Morningside College.

Using the D-II scoring of seven points, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead, capturing the doubles point, claiming all three flights. Neve Brennan (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) and Hanna Butler (Gibson Island, Md./Severn School) played a strong match in the third flight, falling (7-6 (7-5)).

Senior Lydia Fox (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Arlington) led the way as Dickinson had a strong showing in singles. Fox had a dominant second set, but fell (6-2, 0-6, 10-3).

Against Morningside, Brennan and Butler moved into the second flight and claimed an 8-4 win. Olivia Shea (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) and Elisa Varlotta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) added an 8-4 win in the third doubles flight as well.

Butler posted a (6-0, 6-0) decision in second singles flight while Varlotta went (6-0, 6-0) in the sixth. Fox earned another point with a (6-0, 6-2) victory and Shea surrendered just three points to capture her flight (6-2, 6-1). Senior Emily Sprague (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) added a (6-2, 6-4) win in the third.

The Red Devils improve to 2-3 on the season. They return to action on Thursday, taking on the University of Scranton at 6:30 pm.
