River Hawks Edge Devils 2-1 to Claim Sweep

(Selinsgrove, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team dropped a double-header at Susquehanna University on Thursday afternoon. The River Hawks claimed the opener 12-4 and escaped with a slim 2-1 decision in the second.

The River Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added three in the fourth after scoring lone runs in the second and third.

The Red Devils had a big inning in the third, scoring three runs after Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Alissa Lema (Lutherville, Md./Towson) recorded back-to-back singles to trigger the rally.

Julie Siecinski (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) and Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) kept things going with RBI singles and Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Lema drew a walk and moved to third on a pair of stolen bases to set up an RBI single for Paige Hahn (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) to extend the game into the sixth, cutting the deficit to seven at 11-4.

The River Hawks managed to push across another run in the bottom of the sixth for the 12-4 final.

Gutpelet went 2-for-4 while Lema reached on a pair of walks and scored twice in the opener. Siecinski added a hit, RBI and run scored.

Natalie Krzywiec (North Hunterdon, Pa./Norwin) went the distance, recording three strikeouts in her first collegiate start.

The River Hawks struck in the first again to start game two, but the Red Devils kept the damage to just one run as senior Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) came on to start the nightcap.

Susquehanna scored on an error on a stolen base attempt in the first and used a sacrifice fly in the third.

Acocela reached on a single in the sixth and came around to score on a double to left center from Lindsey Keller (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken).

Marissa Fabbo (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham & Munson) led-off the top of the seventh and reached on a single to leftfield. Gutpelet laid down a perfect bunt and reached safely to give Dickinson runners on first and second with no outs.

Kat Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Susquehanna made a strong play at home to prevent Fabbo from scoring the equalizer. The River Hawks recorded the final out to secure the 2-1 win.

Gutpelet went 3-for-4 in the nightcap and Fabbo went 2-for-2 with a walk. Milaszewski recorded eight strikeouts in a five-hit effort.

The Red Devils slip to 6-10 on the season. They are home on Saturday, hosting Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference opener at 1:00 pm.
