(Tucson, Ariz.) – The Dickinson softball team split a double-header with Baldwin Wallace on Friday afternoon to close out the spring break schedule. The Yellow Jackets jumped out early and claimed the opener 9-1 before the Red Devils countered with a 4-2 win to force the split.
Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) singled and came in to score on an RBI single from Julie Siecinski (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) in the top of the first.
The Yellow Jackets answered with one in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on four runs on four hits in the second. They tallied another in the fourth and added three in the fifth for the final of 9-1.
Gutpelet went 2-for-3 in a three-hit effort from BW's Abby Cosart, adding a stolen base in game one as well.
Gutpelet led-off game two with another single and the Red Devils took a 2-0 lead as Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Marissa Fabbo (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham & Munson) reached on a fielder's choice to drive in the second run of the inning.
Siecinski singled and scored on a wild pitch in the third and the Red Devils pushed across another in the fourth. Ashley Whitson (Buchanan, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) reached on an error and came around on a single from senior Alissa Lema (Lutherville, Md./Towson) for the Red Devils' fourth.
The Yellow Jackets scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but Dickinson would hold on for the win.
Six different Red Devils recorded hits while Gutpelet swiped another base in the nightcap. Riley Kuehn (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) got the win, recording four strikeouts and one earned run.
The Red Devils move to 2-5 on the season. The remainder of the season has been suspended indefinitely in response to the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
