Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. - The Dickinson softball team was unable to get revenge for Monday's two losses to California Lutheran University by coming up on the shortend of 6-0 and 19-11 decisions against the Regals on Wednesday afternoon at the Lincoln Park Complex.
Game One - Cal Lutheran 6, DEVILS 0
W - Taryn Faull (2-7) | L - Riley Kuehn (1-3)
Inside the Game
Kuehn began the game strong in the circle with two quick outs, but a single and a walk led to the Regals taking a 1-0 lead on a knock by Hanna Booth. Regan Laubscher then went down swinging to retire the side. In the home-half Zoe Kleeblatt ledoff with a single to center. However, she would advance no further as Faull set down the next three hitters.
A leadoff walk to Natalie Luna helped CLU to make it 2-0 when she came in two batters later on a single for Madison Gunn. After Gunn swiped second base Mia Onesto reached on an error to allow the runner to hustle home for a 3-0 advantage through one and a half. Once again DC would get a base runner when Brooke Espenshade singled with two away, but a fly out from Emma Glosson wrapped up the frame.
The Regals extended it to 4-0 in the third when Mia Antonino drove in Booth with two gone after Booth reached base thanks to a Devils miscue. Faull would produce another shutdown inning as she set down the Red and White in order with two groundouts and a flyout.
CLU tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth courtesy of a sac fly by Makayla Lopez and an RBI single from Onesto to set the 6-0 final. As Dickinson would only muster two runners the rest of the game when Kleeblatt singled to center and Celia Vinacco reached on an error.
Game Two - Cal Lutheran 19, DEVILS 11 (F/5)
W - Taryn Faull (3-7)| L - Lindsay Kucker (0-1)
Inside the Game
The teams did not lack for offense in the second game as they combined for 30 runs in just five innings.
DC got things going with Devon Kueny hitting a single to start the game before Kleeblatt drove her in with two down. However, CLU immediately responded during the home-half of the first with Lopez hitting a single and Ariana Mendoza being hit by starter Emma Varella. That brought Booth to the dish where she smacked a double to plate two, followed by an RBI triple for Laubscher to make it 3-1.
After a quiet second, each side put up four runs in the third. A single for Kueny and a double for Hannah Seburn set the stage for Kleeblatt's sac fly. Then, the Devils got the single train rolling with Paige Hahn, Avery Badger, Espenshade, and Glosson each racking up base hits to lead to three more runs and a 5-3 advantage. Unfortunately, the Regals answered back with four of their own as Emily Blank supplied the big swing with a two-run double, while Laubscher and Mendoza provided run-scoring plate appearances to push the margin to 7-5 after three.
Dickinson had a chance to close the gap in their next trip to the dish as Kueny and Vinacco each singled, but Kleeblatt would line into a double play to retire the side. Beth Belanger took over in the circle to start the home side of the fourth and recorded two quick outs while walking a pair. Mia Garcia stepped to the dish with the bags full and delivered big for CLU with a three-run double. She then came home when Blank produced a base hit. The Regals loaded the bases again, but fortunately for the Devils Kucker got Lopez to pop-up to allow no more damage.
Once again DC fought back with five consecutive hits to start the fifth. After a double for Hahn Natalie Krzywiec came in to run and scored when Espenshade singled. Glosson followed with a knock to put two on for Badger who plated one. Laila Gwathmey offered up the fifth straight hit of the frame driving in Glosson to cut the deficit to 11-8. Two quick outs stalled the momentum for a moment before a pair of walks made every base occupied. That spelled the end of the day for starter Madison Gunn. The new pitcher Faull was greeted rudely with singles from Kleeblatt and Krzywiec knotting the score at 11-11 going to the bottom of the inning.
A walk and a Dickinson error led to Laubscher driving in one with a single. With two on and one away, Blank drove home Booth with a sac fly to center pushing the lead to 13-11 with two out. Unfortunately, for the Red and White things would not go their way from there as two more errors and two singles plated four more. That led to Laubscher stepping into the box and driving in the final two runs of the game with a double for the 19-11 final.
On Deck
Dickinson (1-6) will take a much-needed day off tomorrow before returning to action on Friday for the final two games of the trip against Viterbo (0-10) beginning at 1 p.m.
