Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team scored the first five runs of the game and overcame four errors in the field to hold off St. Norbert's College by a score of 7-5 on Thursday morning at Chain of Lakes Park.
The Red and White were well on their way to a sweep of the Green Knights, but due to the time limit of the field NCAA Rule 5.7.C kicked in as the teams were not able to complete the required seven innings the game was deemed a no contest. That was a shame for the Devils as they led 17-5 in the fifth, unfortunately, the game would go no further.
Game One - DEVILS 7, St. Norbert 5
W - Beau Dana (2-0) | L - Grant Maus (0-1)
Inside the Game
Dickinson touched up starter Mason Sefcik right away as Andrew Mazzone ripped a two-out single to bring up Cole Hare who delivered a triple for the 1-0 lead. Luke Jackson grounded out to end the inning. Nick Volz worked a one-out walk against Matt Spind, but was stranded when the next two hitters flew out.
The Red and White threatened in the second with two on and two away after Kaden Sigmon reached on a fielder's choice and Ian Beumee singled to stick the runners on the corners. However, Lukas Atsalis swung through strike three to retire the side. Spind worked an uneventful one-two-three bottom-half.
Mazzone came up with his second single of the game during the third and Hare followed with a free pass. Sefcik settled down to get the next two batters to stall the possible rally. Once again Spind was calm, cool, and collected putting away the Green Knights in order.
The Devils added onto their lead in the fourth all with two out. As four batters in a single from Atsalis plated Ryan Thompson who started the inning with a two-bagger. Tom Gannaway followed with a base hit and Mazzone was hit by Sefcik to load the bases for Hare. He lifted a ball to center that was misplayed and allowed all three men to hustle home for the 5-0 lead. Maus then took over on the mound retiring Jackson. SN responded during their half as a double and a walk resulted in a two-run double by Isaac Gerhardt. He was followed by Trevor Cornell who singled to cut the deficit to 5-3 after four.
Both teams would come up with leadoff doubles in the fifth, but only the Green Knights could take advantage. After a Devils error, Dana took over for Spind with two on and no outs. He was greeted by another DC error off the bat of Devin Geary to plate one. Geary then stole third and came into score when the throw from the catcher went into left. Dana relaxed from there and set down three of the next four he faced to leave it at 5-5.
The Red and White had three straight hits to kickoff the sixth with consecutive doubles by Atsalis and Gannaway drove in one, while a Mazzone single plated the other for the 7-5 advantage through six.
SN had one last chance in the seventh with two on and one-out, but Dana fanned the final two hitters to secure the victory.
