Devils Sweep Blue Jays on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team clubbed a combined 23 hits on Tuesday during a doubleheader sweep of the host Elizabethtown College Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon at The Nest. The Red and White won the first game 11-5, before picking up an 8-6 win in the nightcap.

Game One - DEVILS 11, Elizabethtown 5

Pitching Decisions

W - Lindsay Kucker (2-3) | L - Paige Phillips (6-4)

Inside the Game

DC was off and running in the first as Devon Kueny and Celia Vinacco both singled to begin the game before Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week Hannah Seburn plated both with a two-bagger to left. ETown threatened in the home-half loading the bases with two gone, but Riley Kuehn got Gillian Toomey to watch strike three.

Zoe Kleeblatt started the second by being hit with a pitch and then two batters later Laia Gwathmey smacked a single to center driving in Kleeblatt for the 3-0 edge. However, Kueny hit into a double play to retire the side. The Blue Jays answered with four in their half as two walks and a single filled the bags with one away for Kadyn Crisswell. She ripped a bases-clearing triple to right-center to knot the score 3-3. Then after a flyout by Kaitlyn Witmer the pitcher, Phillips gave the hosts a 4-3 edge through two with a single up the box.

In the third Seburn continued her strong season with a one-out double to left, before being driven in by a two-bagger for Paige Hahn with two away. Brooke Espenshade tried to keep things going but popped up to third. The Red and White added two more in the fourth as Kleeblatt scored on a Blue Jays error after working a walk and Vinacco ripped an RBI single through the right side for 6-4 lead after three-and-a-half. ETown pulled one back in the bottom-half as Phillips walked, before scoring on a DC error.

Dickinson extended their advantage in the following inning with Kucker, Hahn, and Kleeblatt all notching singles to load the bases for Hannah Brenner. She reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Emma Varella to come home as she ran for Hahn. The Devils put up four more runs over the final two innings with Kucker delivering a two-run homer in the sixth, while Kueny and Gwathmey scored during the seventh when Vinacco reached on an error to set the 11-5 score.

Game Two - DEVILS 8, Elizabethtown 6

Pitching Decisions

W - Riley Kuehn (4-3) | L - Tori Caputo (0-5)

Inside the Game

This time it was ETown that struck first as two walks and a single filled the bases with two gone for Megan Thomas. She gave the Blue Jays the lead with a base hit through the right side one run scored, but Witmer was thrown out at home to hold it at just 1-0. The home team made it 3-0 in the second with a single by Lisa Scanlon and a free pass to Cassidy Dodds led to a two-run double for Kristen Aydelotte.

Kleeblatt singled to get the third going, but consecutive groundouts moved her to third with two away for Kueny. She got DC on the board with a knock to centerfield, unfortunately, a groundout by Vinacco allowed no more damage.

A quiet fourth frame led to a very busy fifth for both sides. A base hit for Kleeblatt and a fielder's choice by Emma Glosson put two in scoring position for Kueny. During her at-bat, Caputo uncorked a wild pitch to drive in one before she grounded out to second scoring Glosson and tying the game 3-3. However, ETown responded in the home-half as Witmer doubled, prior to Crisswell blasting a two-run homer to reclaim the lead 5-3 going to the sixth.

An infield single for Seburn and a Blue Jays error with Hahn at the dish led to one coming in. Then, back-to-back hits from Espenshade and Kleeblatt set the stage for Glosson with the bases full. She kept the train moving with an RBI single, followed by an RBI groundout for Gwathmey before Kueny smacked one to right driving in a fourth run of the frame making it 7-5 heading to the seventh.

Once again it was Seburn setting the table with a single to center leading to a two-bagger off the stick of Kucker stretching it to 8-5. Consecutive flyouts would wrap up the inning to setup last call for the Jays. After a hit batter and a double from Witmer the tying run came to the dish in the form of Ashley Mistichelli. She produced a sac fly to score one. Thomas grounded out to third for the final out of the game.
