Devils Suffer Pair of Setbacks to Green Terror

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team fell behind in the first inning of each game and was never able to overcome the deficits as the Red and White fell by scores of 7-4 and 9-1 to the visiting McDaniel College Green Terror on Tuesday afternoon at Dickinson Park.

Game One - McDaniel 7, DEVILS 4

Pitching Decision

W - Hannah Costa (3-0) | L - Riley Kuehn (4-5) | S - Krista Waller (1)

Inside the Game

McDaniel struck in the first inning as two singles led to a two-run, two-out double from Makayla Calamita for a 2-0 lead. Devon Kueny began the home-half with an infield single, but Costa settled down and got the next three hitters to retire the side.

Neither side would really mount any kind of offensive pressure over the next few frames as the game went to the fifth still at 2-0. Kuehn got the first two batters she faced, before running into issues as she allowed a base-hit and a walk to put runners on the corners for Evie Craig. She ripped a single to center to drive home two more for a 4-0 edge going to the bottom-half. Dickinson loaded the bags with one away on singles by Zoe Kleeblatt and Kueny along with a walk to Emma Glosson. However, Celia Vinacco went down on strikes and Hannah Seburn flew out to allow no damage.

The Red and White finally worked their way onto the scoreboard during the sixth as hits from Lindsay Kucker and Paige Hahn put two in scoring position for Brooke Espenshade. She stepped up and whacked a single to center to score two before two batters later Glosson sent a liner to left plating Espenshade and trimming the gap to 4-3 after six.

Unfortunately, for DC the visitors added three more in the top of the seventh as a single, walk, and hit batter filled the bags for Craig. She drove home one with a sac to left, before Calamita scored two more with a two-bagger to left. Dickinson tried to prolong the game with their final at-bat when singles for Seburn and Kucker resulted in an RBI single for Hahn cutting it to 7-4. However, Waller would allow no more damage as she got Jen Klepfer to pop up to end the game.

Game Two - McDaniel 9, DEVILS 1 (F/6)

Pitching Decision

W - Parker Murphy (1-3) | L - Lindsay Kucker (2-5)

Inside the Game

McDaniel took a commanding lead from the get-go scoring eight times in the first inning as the Green Terror had their first ten batters reach thanks to seven hits and two walks. Then, after  Megan Horsey watched strike three go by Craig capped off the scoring with a bases-loaded single to left for an 8-0 before Dickinson even came to bat. The Red and White tried to chip into the deficit in the home-half as Vinacco and Seburn both singled with one away. However, Kucker and Hahn flew out to end the frame.

The pitching staff settled down for the Red Devils after that rocky first as Kucker allowed nothing else heading into the third. There she gave up a walk and single which signaled the end of Kucker's day and brought on Emma Varella. She got back-to-back groundouts to retire the side. DC threatened to begin the bottom-half with Laia Gwathmey, Kueny, and Vinacco producing three straight singles. That brought Seburn to the dish where she faced reliever Parker Murphy. She worked a walk to force in a run, but then a double-play and a groundout wrapped up the inning.

McDaniel plated their final run of the game in the sixth thanks to four walks by Varella forcing in a run for the 9-1 advantage. Espenshade delivered a one-out single for Dickinson, however, a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the game.

Dickinson (6-13, 0-4 Centennial) continues conference play on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Haverford College to Dickinson Park for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
