HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Dickinson women's tennis team kicked off a busy week of action with a hard fought 5-4 win over the Stevenson University Mustangs in the Spring Break opener at Chaplin Park.
Doubles (DEVILS 2-1)
All three matches were tightly contested as Dickinson began the day with an 8-4 victory at number two where
Sara Jaklitsch and
Dana Kleinman took down Sofia McCoy and Erin Saunders. Stevenson then drew level in the top spot thanks to Shelby Carter and Torrienne Emery edging out the duo of
Alisa Steele and
Bonnie Thomas (8-5). The Devils would reclaim their advantage heading into the singles when
Maddie Lindquist and
Molly Michel posted the 8-6 win.
Singles (Tied 3-3)
Michel got the Red and White off to a strong start with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Erin Saunders at number three. After Thomas playing at two dropped a tough three setter to Carter, Steele handed DC a 4-2 advantage by collecting a straight set win versus Emery 7-6 (7-4 TB), 6-0. A 6-2, 6-0 triumph for Kara Chwang against Lindquist (5th) gave the Mustangs hope, but Kleinman secured the victory for the Devils by knocking off McCoy by identical 6-2 scores. At six,
Katharine van Kesteren battled hard, however she was defeated by scores of 6-1, 6-4 against Yana Vaiman.
