WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team continued their strong run in Florida on Thursday as the pitching quartet of
Koll Peichel,
Nathan Weisoly,
Brian Riley and
Drew Norton combined to allow just one run and seven hits over two games as the Red and White swept the University of Wisconsin-Superior by scores of 7-0 and 10-1 at Lake Myrtle Park.
Game One: DEVILS 7, Yellowjackets 0 (F/7)
Time of Game: 1:50
Pitching Decision: W -
Koll Peichel (4-0) | L - Gio Basile (0-1)
Inside the Game
Following a clean top of the first for Peichel, the Dickinson offense went to work in the home-half with a walk to
Kenny Tagliareni and single from
Dylan Posencheg led to
Matt Torres plating them both on a one-out single to right-center. After
Ryan Thompson singled, there were two-on with two down for
Luke Gartland who smoked a two-run triple making it 4-0 after one. Peichel then struck out the side in order during the second, allowing for the Devils to scratch one more across in the last of the inning when Tagliareni produced a single to right, before Posencheg drove him in with his second knock of the game pushing the lead to 5-0 through two.
Peichel continued to be strong on the hill as he allowed just one hit through the first five innings he tossed letting things stay at 5-0. The Red and White would add one more to their total in the bottom of the fifth as three consecutive singles for Thompson,
Josh Markley and Garland led to a run crossing the pate stretching it out to 6-0. Another shutdown inning put up by Peichel in the sixth, brought Dickinson back to the dish where a one-out triple for Tagliareni allowed the third hit of the contest from Posencheg to make it 7-0. Peichel would finish off his complete game shutout with a groundout, flyout and strikeout in the seventh.
The Devils Mound Report
Peichel remained unbeaten on the season thanks to his two-hit, seven inning shutout in which he hurled nine strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
Game Two: DEVILS 10, Yellowjackets 1 (F/7)
Time of Game: 2:25
Pitching Decision: W -
Nathan Weisoly (1-0) | L - Owen Santiago (0-1)
Inside the Game
After a scoreless first, Dickinson went to work in the top of the second against Santiago where a double for Torres and walks to both Thompson and Gartland filled the cushions with no outs. That was when
Kyle Bailey and Christian produced sacrifice flies giving DC a 2-0 lead. Weisoly would run into a touch of trouble during the bottom-half giving up a double and hitting a batter, but worked around it with a pick-off, strikeout and groundout. The Red and White would reward Weisoly's effort with two more in the third as singles from Tagliareni and Posencheg as well as a free pass to
Kaden Sigmon, set the stage for a two-run single by Thompson off of new arm Ethan Coady.extending the gap to 4-0 through two-and-a-half. Weisoly went back to the hill for the bottom of the third and hurled two strikeouts as well as inducing a groundout to third. The fourth saw Dickinson continue to pound away at the Yellowjackets pitching staff as two batters in a walk and a throwing error let one home, before Max Howell came into the game from the pen and with two free passes faced a bases-loaded situation for the Sigmon. He delivered an RBI single, followed by an RBI hit batter for Torres and a two-run knock by Thompson (9-0). Two men later a sac fly off the stick of Bailey made it 10-0 entering the home-half of the fourth.
That was when
Brian Riley took over for Weisoly and thanks to a pair of singles let the Yellowjackets dent the board at 10-1 with one gone. He then settled down and recorded a strikeout and flyout to retire the side. He would then return for the fifth and put away the side in order thanks in large part to a pair of Ks. Norton came on to pitch the seventh trying to close out the sweep and that was exactly what he would as he recorded a trio of popups for the 10-1 final.
The Devils Mound Report
Weisoly was excellent allowing just two hits and fanning five over three innings. His only blemish on the ledger would be two hit batters. Riley was solid as well conceding a pair of knocks and one run to go along with three strikeouts. Norton wrapped things up with two frames of one-hit shutout relief, chipping in one of the Devils nine strikeouts on the day.
The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (9-1) will look to finish off a masterful Spring Break trip this afternoon with a doubleheader against the Kohawks of Coe College.
