CARLISLE, Pa. - Behind a solid start from
Ethan Hamilton and some eighth-inning heroics the Dickinson baseball team was able to earn a season-series split with the McDaniel College Green Terror collecting a 6-4 win on Sunday afternoon at MacPhail Field.
Time of Game: 2:35
Pitching Decision: W -
Joey Sangiuolo (1-0) | L - Ryan Kelly (1-1)
Inside the Game
Each team had a few base runners over the opening two innings, but no one was able to get beyond second base as the game entered the third 0-0. In the top of that frame a leadoff walk would come back to hurt Hamilton as a sacrifice bunt by Quinn Dean moved the runner to second where Ethan Haddock provided an RBI single to left-center for a 1-0 lead. However, in the home-half the Devils answered back as a base hit for
Dylan Posencheg and walk to
Ryan Thompson put two on with one down for
Matt Torres. He continued his strong season with a two-run single to left-center for a 2-1 edge. A walk to
Chase Weller spelled the end of the day for Dominic DiBlasi as he was replaced by Matt Mondrone and was able to pitch out of any further damage. Things remained at 2-1 going into the last of the fifth when Thompson was hit by a pitch and
Kaden Sigmon doubled to place two in scoring position for Torres. He flied out to center where Shane Daly unleashed a strong throw to the plate cutting down a tagging Thompson. Fortunately, though for the Red and White the next man into the box was
Chase Weller and he unloaded a two-run homer over the left-field wall making it 4-1 going to the sixth. An infield single for Joey Hubinger forced Hamilton from the contest and brought on
Brian Riley. A double and walk filled the bags with no one out for Tyler Yohn who produced a sac fly to left trimming it down to 4-2, before a flyout and strikeout retired the side. McDaniel got all the back during the seventh when with one gone a single for Daly set the stage for an RBI two-bagger by Haddock. That brought Sangiuolo in from the pen and he allowed a single and sac fly to knot the game (4-4) as we moved to the last of the eighth.
Luke Gartland was plunked and
Christian Kim walked to put two on removing Kelly from the game and bringing on Matt Speakman. Following a sac bunt for
Johnny Bruno,
Kenny Tagliareni was intentionally walked to fill the cushions for pinch-hitter
Josh Markley. He worked an RBI free pass and Thompson lifted a sacrifice to center for the 6-4 lead going to the ninth. A one-out double and walk, followed by a sac bunt had the tying runs in scoring position for Yohn. However, he would flyout to Bruno in right to end the game.
Devils Mound Report
Hamilton took the no decision despite a strong five innings pitched allowing just four hits and two runs, while fanning four. Riley lasted 1.1 out of the pen giving up two runs on three hits, including a strikeout. Sangiuolo earned the victory with 2.2 frames of two-hit shutout relief.
