Devils Soar Past Eagles in Opener, but Drop Game Two

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team used 14 hits and a seven inning complete game on the hill from Austin Buzza to pick up an 11-1 run-rule victory in game one of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader against the visiting University of Mary Washington. However, the Eagles answered back in strong fashion posting a solid 10-1 triumph in game two at MacPhail Field.

Final Score - DEVILS 11, Eagles 1 (F/7)
Records - DEVILS 8-6 | Eagles 16-6
Pitching Decision - W - Austin Buzza (3-1) | L - Ty Lowe (4-1)

Inside the Game
  • After a quiet first inning-and-a-half Dickinson got to work offensively in the last of the second. An error allowed Luke Gartland to reach, before Kevin Schmidt smacked a double to left putting two in scoring position. Christian Kim would pick up a sacrifice fly and Dylan Posencheg plated one on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. A double for Josh Markley provided the opportunity for Kaden Sigmon to come up with an RBI single to take a 3-0 lead into the third.
  • Another "one-two-three" frame for Buzza, set the stage for a single by Bailey, walk to Schmidt and fielder's choice from Kim to fill the pillows with one away. Posencheg stroked a single to left scoring one, before a sac fly off the stick of Markley stretched the gap to 5-0 entering the fourth.
  • The Eagles used an error, hit batter and fielder's choice to hack into the deficit slightly at 5-1 going to the bottom of the fourth. That was when Dickinson continued to pile on as Matt Torres was hit to leadoff and Thompson doubled to right putting two in scoring position for Bailey who lashed a single to plate one. After Gartland was plunked Lowe was replaced on the mound by Matthew Boyd. He surrendered a two-run single to Schmidt, before letting up an RBI knock to Markley pushing the margin to 9-1 through four.
  • Buzza would allow a single during the top of the fifth, but ultimately provided the shutdown inning to keep the lead at 9-1. Three straight Devil hits in the home-half led to two more coming home as Ryan Thompson singled, Bailey tripled and Gartland picked up a single as well to account for the two runs.
  • Buzza gave up a few more base runners over the ensuing two frames, but never allowed a man to reach third as he closed out the 11-1 win.

  • RBIs - Bailey, Markley and Schmidt (2)

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson opened up the home-half of the first with Markley reaching on an error, Sigmon drawing a walk and Torres hit by a pitch. After Thompson went down on strikes, with Bailey at the plate Markley would swipe home to take a 1-0 lead through one.
  • Three singles in the top of the second led to a pair of Eagles coming home in the second, before an error and single an inning later let one more in to grab a 3-1 edge entering the fourth.
  • The Devils would not be able to do much against new Eagles pitcher McComber as he took over on the mound for Justin Ritz at the start of the bottom of the third and he set them down in order four straight innings. In that same timeframe his offense would get to both Peichel and Charlie Bien for four more on six hits to make it 7-1 entering the seventh.
  • Gartland recorded their next hit in the home-half with a single to center, while Markley and Sigmon chipped in base hits an inning later, but none of the Devils were able to get across home.
  • Two hits and a DC miscue in the top of the ninth helped the Eagles to plate three more and set the 10-1 final.
