Devils Honor Seniors, but Fall Short of Postseason

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team knew the score on Sunday afternoon a sweep over the visiting Haverford College would book the Red and White a spot in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament, while a split would leave things out of the Devils hands and their fate hanging in the balance. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the Fords left Centeral Pennsylvania with the two-game sweep picking up wins of 6-3 and 8-1 to prevent the Devils from playing postseason baseball for the third straight season. Prior to the start of the first game Dickinson honored their dozen senior members from the Class of 2025.

Inside the Game
  • The visitors got to DC starter Austin Buzza during the top of the first with a leadoff double by Harry Genth coming around to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly to right for Jackson Sgro. During the last of the frame, with two down Kevin Schmidt was hit by Grohowski and Matt Torres singled to left putting two on. However, a groundout from Kaden Sigmon ended any potential threat.
  • After a pair of scoreless innings, the Fords pushed the margin to 2-0 during the fourth using three consecutive singles. Dickinson attempted to respond in the bottom-half as Torres was hit by a pitch and Sigmon provided a base hit to left putting two on with no one out. Unfortunately, Luke Gartland went down on strikes and Kyle Bailey bounced into an inning ending double-play.
  • An inning later, with a man on first and two away, Buzza would loose command slightly hitting the next three batters to force one across the plate making it 3-0. The home-half of the frame was when Dickinson cracked the scoreboard as Chase Weller began things by blasting the Grohowski offering over the left-field wall. Ryan Thompson followed with a single, but was forced out at second when Josh Markley hit into a fielder's choice. Schmidt then drove Markley home with a two-bagger to deep right. 
  • A pair of singles by Thompson and Schmidt gave the Red and White a chance to get the tying run across during the last of the seventh, but Grohowski got Torres to hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice.
  • The Fords took advantage of a pair of DC errors and one hit by Chuck Norton to push three home in to the front-half of the eighth again new arm Koll Peichel. Dickinson tried to answer back with their chance with Gartland and Shawn Arneja drawing walks with one away. Unfortunately, flyouts for Weller and Nathan Bowman sent the game to the ninth.
  • The home side put together another push with their last chance when walks to Thompson and Torres along with a error allowing Schmidt to reach filled the pillows with one gone for Sigmon. He delivered an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left, before getting Gartland to strikeout for the final out.

Inside the Game
  • Both Cohen and Norton were strong early as the game entered the third still tied at 0-0.
  • The top of the third was when Haverford took a 1-0 lead using a hit batter, single and walk to load the bags with one down. Jonny Flieder bounced into a fielder's choice to plate the man from third, before Matt Dahl popped up to second ending the frame. 
  • After a shutdown frame by Cohen, a walk and single pushed another runner home to extend the margin to 2-0 heading to the last of the fourth.
  • The Fords pitcher continued to be lockdown setting down the Red and White in order during the fourth and fifth. A two-bagger and single had men on the corners and forced Norton from the contest as Zach Wernick was summoned from the pen. A sac bunt and sac fly to right got both runners in bumping the gap to 4-0 after five-and-a-half. One out base hits for Bowman and Thompson gave the Devils their best chance to dig into the deficit, but Markley grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to halt the rally.
  • A quiet seventh sent the game to the eighth still at 4-0. With one down and a man on third, Daniel Rosman reached on a fielder's choice to plate one. He would then steal second and head to third courtesy of a DC error which allowed a fielder's choice by Miles Prrusek to make it 6-0. Another DC miscue and groundout resulted in two more crossing home extending the advantage to 8-0. George Thorp opened up the home-half of the frame with a single through the left-side, but a double play and groundout ended the inning.
  • After a silent top of the ninth, the Red and White entered their last chance facing an eight-run deficit. Staring at that mountain Head Coach Craig Hanson decided to have a little bit of fun as he sent some of his senior pitchers to the dish. Peichel opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch, prior to letting a passed ball and defensive indifference get him to third. Nathan Weisoly then struck out, but Grayson Walker poked an RBI single through the left-side to put DC on the board (8-1). However, a lineout and strikeout ended the game.
