Devils Clipped by Owls and #19 Panthers on Day Two of Hawaii Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Dickinson softball team continued their Hawaiian swing on Tuesday with battles against Kenyon College and 19th-ranked Chapman University. The Red and White were downed by the Owls 11-1 in five prior to giving the Panthers all they could handle in a 6-4 setback.

Game One
Final Score
– Owls 11, DEVILS 1 (F/5)
Team Records – DEVILS (2-3) | Kenyon (7-5)
Pitching Decision – W – Izzy Akin (2-1) | L – Abby Kohan (1-2)
Inside the Game
  • Jessie Sandusky opened the game with a base hit to right-center, but Izzy Akin was able to setdown the next three hitters. Then in the home-half, two singles off of Abby Kohan had two on with two gone for Leah Kuban. She would give the Owls a 1-0 lead with an RBI base hit to right giving Kenyon a 1-0 edge going to the second.
  • Kohan provided the only DC hit over the next two innings as Akin continued to hold the Red and White at-bay 1-0 with the contest entering the fourth.
  • After Akin put down the Devils in order during the top of the frame Kenyon went to work in the home-half. Kohan got the first batter to fly out, but then allowed back-to-back singles leading to her departure from the circle and bringing on Skye Cooke. She would walk Keala Montgomery to fill the bags which resulted in an RBI single for Leah Schlissberg to plate one, before Maeve McLaughlin came up with a three-run double for the 5-0 advantage through four.
  • Alex Johnson began the inning with a knock to left and then swiped second. That set the stage for Kohan to drive her in with a single. Marah Goldman followed with a base hit to put two on with no one out. Unfortunately, Akin then retired Elizabeth Raefski, Sandusky and Jane Lloyd to halt any potential rally. The Owls started with double and walk, before Akin helped herself with an RBI single. A free pass to Lily Colvin loaded the bases for Montgomery. She would then square off with the third arm of the day for DC as Emory Hadden entered and would allow a walk along with an inside the park grand slam to give Kenyon the 11-1 win.

Team Records – DEVILS (2-4) | Chapman (15-3)
Pitching Decision – W – Cameron Burroughs (1-0) | L – Erin McMahon (1-2) | S - Anabell Hinojosa (1)
Inside the Game
  • Things were quiet in the first with Cameron Burroughs posting a "three-up, three-down" top-half, while Erin McMahon conceded a walk but got out of it unscathed.
  • After the Devils were retired in the front-half of the second, three straight Panther singles resulted in one scoring. The next run crossed on a DC error, before back-to-back base hits for Ava Fagin and Milla Fukuda allowed two more to cross. A fielder's choice by Shea Higa had two on for Aleena Helms who connected with the McMahon pitch to plate two more making it 6-0 through two.
  • Lauren Routzahn doubled for the Devils and Brooke Wiegand delivered a triple for Chapman during the third, but neither side was able to force the runner home.
  • The Red and White finally got to Burroughs a frame later as singles from Johnson and Amelia Plescia coupled with a walk to Lloyd filled the cushions for DC with no one out. In stepped McMahon and she helped her cause by clearing things off thanks to a three-run double trimming it to 6-3 entering the home-half. Hadden took over for McMahon in the circle and recorded two groundouts and a flyout.
  • Dickinson worked on putting together a much needed rally in the fifth using hits from Routzahn and Raefski along with a walk to Lloyd loading the bases with unfortunately two away. Hadden then flew out to right field ending the threat. The Panthers posted a single and double to have two in scoring position with two away. Hadden would get a groundout off the stick of Ava Fagin to retire the side.
  • Anabell Hinojosa took over in the circle for the Panthers in the seventh and immediately put the Devils down to their last out with a strikeout and popout. However, a single for Johnson and free pass to Lloyd brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Plescia. She smacked a single to plate Johnson, but Kaylie Renner followed with a strikeout ending the game.
