(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's tennis team battled in every match, but dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Muhlenberg College, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Mules improved to 8-5 overall and 7-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 8-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference, just missing out on a spot in the playoffs.
The Mules edged the Devils to take a 3-0 lead after doubles, and claimed a pair of singles matches to earn the decision. First-year Madison Parks (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and junior Sarah Cantor (Providence, R.I./The Wheeler School) put up a strong fight in the third flight before falling, 9-8.
Muhlenberg earned points with an 8-5 decision in the top flight and an 8-4 win at the number two spot.
The Devils looked to overcome the deficit in singles. Sydney Diamond (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) won the second flight in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).
Senior Madeline Altholtz (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) claimed the third flight (6-4, 6-2), and first-year Joana Nunes (Carcavelos, Portugal/St. Julien's) won in straight sets to claim the fifth. Classmate Claire Stoner (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) overcame a tough first set, to capture the sixth flight with a strong finish, (6-7, 6-3, 6-0).
