Devils Have Big Day at Goucher College Invite

BALTIMORE - The Dickinson women's tennis team was back in action on Saturday competing as individuals at the first ever Goucher College Invitational at the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl Tennis Center.

Doubles
Flight A
The pair of Chloe Heller and Loretta Szych knocked off Clayton and Stepleman from Stevenson University by a score of 6-1. They were then tripped up by Gettysburg College duo Mazzeo-Zheliaskova in the semifinal 6-0. On the other side of the bracket Natasha Sharnoff and Alisa Steele bested the Goucher pair of Navarro and Siggen (6-1). The duo then fell to the same Gettysburg team in the final by a score of 6-3.

Flight B
Anabel Romero Gemmell and Merve Uyumazturk opened up with a 6-2 win over Carrocio-Paullin from Gettysburg. Maddie Lindquist and Avery Williamson suffered a 6-3 setback to another Gettysburg unit of Dougherty-Levkov. The Devil tandem of Romero Gemmell and Uymazturk would then take the title 6-0 against Dougherty and Levkov.

Singles
Flight A
Steele began her bracket with an 8-2 defeat at the hands of Arina Zheliaskova. In the same draw Sharnoff defeated Stepleman (8-0), but then tried her luck against Gettysburg's Gabriella Mazzeo and suffered an 8-7 loss.

Flight B
Heller started out by downing Siggen 8-7 (7-2 tiebreak), which put her right in the final against her teammate Uyumazturk who bested Lerkov (8-3). With the two Devils in the final it would ultimately be Uyumazturk who needed a tiebreak to solve Heller 8-7 (7-1 tiebreak).

Flight C
Szych opened up with an 8-4 triumph over Alexa Benedict from the host Goucher. In the same draw, Romero Gemmell beat Anderson out of Penn State-Harrisburg (8-0), before knocking off Paullin from Gettysburg 8-2. That set up another matchup of Devils for the title of the bracket as Szych held off Romero Gemmell by a margin of 8-4.

Flight D
Brenna Bussinger blanked Njemanze 8-0 in her first match. She then went down to Carrocio from Gettysburg 8-5, but would win the consolation match over Strohecker out of Penn State-Harrisburg (8-1).

Flight E
Williamson took out PSH's Mannino by a margin of 8-2, before advancing to the final thanks to an 8-0 beating of Lanese from the host Goucher. At the bottom of the bracket, Lindquist posted an 8-2 win in her opener and then knocked off Graham out of Gettysburg (8-7, 7-4 tiebreaker). That led to the third all DC final of the singles competition with Williamson collecting an 8-4 victory over Lindquist.

Up Next
Dickinson will now have to wait until Valentine's Day to get back to action when they head to Madison, New Jersey for a non-conference battle with both Drew University and The College of New Jersey with the action scheduled for 1pm.
